The new version of Timeshift 1.6.2 is now available with Clone feature capability. Timeshift is an open source application which can be used to backup Linux system and restore it anytime without having to worry to lose your personal data because Timeshift will automatically exclude your documents, pictures and all your personal data. It will only backup the system files.

This tutorial, I am going to show you how to clone Elementary OS Luna system into another disk. Then you can use the backup to boot your computer with the clone of Elementary OS. So you will have two computer with the same OS, settings, wallpaper, applications etc.

A. Install Timeshift on Elementary OS Luna

First we need to install Timeshift on Elementary OS Luna. Paste these commands on Terminal to install Timeshift on Luna

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install timeshift

B. Open Timeshift

Now open Timeshift and we are ready to clone Elementary OS Luna system to another disk. In this case, second hard disk must exist to store the backup data/cloned computer. You can use USB external drive or USB flash disk (depends on how much space your computer used).

On the first window, select the backup device. Backup device is the destination device to store the clone.

clone elementary os luna 1

Next, click Clone button

clone elementary os luna 2

Next select the Device for bootloader installation from the list. Don’t forget to select the device for the clone destination which should be listed on the target.

clone elementary os luna 3

Press Restore to start the cloning. The process will take several minutes depends on the system size. When finished, you can use the second hard disk to boot your computer.
