How to create a new Droplet at DigitalOcean.com

This tutorial is going to show you how to create a new Droplet at DigitalOcean.com cloud computing service. Droplet is a term of a computer running in the “Cloud”. DigitalOcean calls its virtual private servers Droplets; each Droplet that you spin up is a new VPS for your personal use.

In order to create a new Droplet, you can simply follow the instruction shown here. But I also want to create a note for my self or anyone who need this. First of all, DigitalOcean has many interesting options to have our own virtual private server at an affordable price.

First, login to DigitalOcean. I assume here you have register your self already at DigitalOcean. Once logged in, if this is your first Droplet, you will see this page.

Next,  select your distribution. DigitalOcean provided a ready to use Linux distribution for your private server.

Or you can also select One-Click Apps. This is a ready to use Linux distribution with pre-installed or pre-configured the selected apps.

On this example, I choose Ubuntu 14.04.3 64 bit edition. I will configure my server as a VPN server.

Next is to select the server size from the list. As a starting, I would go for the cheapest one.

Next, select the Droplet region. I recommend you to select the closest region with your current area. In this case, I select Singapore.

Optionally, you may select some other options available such as private networking, backups, etc. They will charge you with some additional cost if you choose to add more features to your private server.

Now your new Droplet is ready. The public IP address is shown and you can use it to access your server using your favorite tool such as putty or other ssh client.

You can also use the web browser to access the console. Click More on the Droplet you want to manage and select Access Console.
