How to install Minecraft 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10

Minecraft is a popular sandbox indie game. The new version of Minecraft 1.8 is now released with some improvements. This tutorial will guide you how to install Minecraft 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 and can be used as well on Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn. Since Minecraft requires OpenJDK to be installed on Ubuntu first.

Steps to install Minecraft 1.8 on Ubuntu

A. Install OpenJDK on Ubuntu

Open Terminal and paste these commands

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre

Or, if you prefer Oracle Java, you may install it using Webupd8 PPA repository

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer

B. Install Minecraft

wget https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.jar
java -jar Minecraft.jar

Done. Now you can start playing Minecraft 1.8 on Ubuntu 14.04 or Ubuntu 14.10. Enjoy
