This tutorial will show you how to install WinSCP on Ubuntu 16.04. As you know, WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client, FTP client, WebDAV client and SCP client for Windows. Its main function is file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers scripting and basic file manager functionality. There is no Linux version of WinSCP, so we need to tweak a little bit to get WinSCP running on Linux.
How to install WinSCP on Ubuntu 16.04
In order to install WinSCP on Ubuntu Linux, we need to install PlayOnLinux first. PlayOnLinux is a special software that lets us to install Windows software on Linux. To install PlayOnLinux on Ubuntu, you can use this command below:
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
Next step is to download the latest version of WinSCP. You can get the installation file here. The latest version when I wrote this post is WinSCP version 5.9.2.
Now Open PlayOnLinux and click Install a Program on the left panel.
Click Install a non-listed program at the bottom. The installation wizard will open up, press Next and then select Install a program in a new virtual drive. Here we will create a new virtual drive.
Press Next and type the name for the new virtual drive. For example I use virtualdrive02 for the name.
You will be asked to configure pre install stuff. Leave it and press Next. Select the application architecture. Select 64 bit or 32 bit depends on the software. In this case I use 64 bit application for WinSCP. The 32 bit selection returned error.
Press Next and PlayOnLinux will create the virtualdrive. Once completed, you will see the following window. Click Browse button and point to the WinSCP installation file (.exe) you’ve downloaded on the previous step and Press Next.
Now the WinSCP installation wizard should open. Follow the wizard until it completed.
When WinSCP installation completed, you will see the following window. This step will create WinSCP shortcut. Select WinSCP from the list and press Next.
Give a name for the shortcut and you are done. Now you will see WinSCP icon listed on PlayOnLinux as follow.
As you can see, PlayOnLinux also created a shortcut on my Desktop. To open the application, simply double click the application icon on the desktop or select the shortcut on PlayOnLinux and click Run.
