There are many people interested to switch to Linux but they don’t know where to start. So here, I want to try to create a sequential tutorial or introduction to any Linux that I use. For now I will start with PinguyOS 14.04, an Ubuntu based Linux desktop with Gnome desktop environment. PinguyOS 14.04.3 has just released. You can install it any time with ease. For the introduction, I am going to show you some essential parts of PinguyOS desktop.
A. The Desktop
PinguyOS 14.04 comes with Gnome desktop which some modifications on the application menu and some other sections.
As you can see, all the applications installed can be accessed through Menu (1). You can also add the shortcut to the dock (4). PinguyOS comes with an informative widget on the right side (3). You can remove or disable it any time. On the top right, you will find a notification icon, clock, volume control and shutdown button.
B. Application Menu
As I previously mentioned above, all the installed applications on PinguyOS can be reached easily via the top left Menu. The applications are divided into categories such as Internet, Office etc.

- Search box
The search box is very useful to find an application. Simply type the application name there and it will displayed on the menu for easier access.
Now on the top right panel, there is a shutdown icon. When you click it, you will see some adjustable settings.
- Volume control
- Logged user. You can also log out from this current user from this menu
- Settings.
- Lock computer
- Shut down computer
