The new version of Solus OS 2017.01 was released few days ago and I just got a chance to review this new version now. Solus OS is a barely new Linux distribution which is believed is not based on any other major distribution. I have been testing Solus OS 1.2.1 and it works pretty well till now. And the new Solus OS 2017.01 comes with some refreshing features, new wallpapers and its pretty fast. I run Solus OS 2017 from a Live USB but I don’t feel any performance degradation.

Solus OS 2017.01 brings Budgie Desktop 10.2.9 to the board. Its a lightweight, simple and beautiful Desktop Environment. I do love Budgie Desktop because its simplicity and performance. Solus OS does a great job to couple its OS and Budgie Desktop.

Technical Information

Solus OS 2017.01 comes with the following:

  • Codename: Shanon
  • Kernel: 4.8.15
  • Budgie Desktop: 10.2.9

Software Manager

Personally, I like the Solus OS Software Manager. Its very responsive and lightweight.

The Third party software installation really helpful for us to install additional software such as Google Chrome, Spotify and many more. On this version, more software have been added to the third party section. For example, now we can install Google Chrome, Google Earth, Insync, Plex Media Server, Skype and many more. Its a great additions.

Solus 2017.01 comes with Arc Icon Theme and Arc GTK Theme as default ones. And I think its a great GTK  and Icon Theme anyone will love.

Applications

There are not many applications that come along with 1 GB ISO file of Solus OS. But as I mentioned before, we can easily add more software to Solus afterward. The following applications are available by default:

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Transmission BitTorrent Client
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • GParted

Bottom Line

I really excited trying Solus OS 2017.01 on my Laptop. It works smoothly, lightweight and lightning fast. The system font also match with the user interface. So, I think I would stay with Solus OS 2017.01 for a while.
