5 things to do after installing Elementary OS Luna

I just installed Elementary OS Luna on my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge laptop. Here are first 5 things I do after installing Elementary OS Luna on my laptop.

1. Install Additional Drivers

My Laptop uses ATI Radeon graphic card which support 3D features. This 3D features will not be enabled by default. I need to install additional drivers provided by Elementary OS developer team. You can read this post to install additional drivers on Elementary OS Luna.

2. Install Adobe Flash, MP3 and DVD support.

Since Elementary OS Luna was built based on Ubuntu, we can easily install the restricted extras package to cover the Flash plugins, MP3 and DVD support. After this we can play YouTube videos, play DVD movie and play MP3 on Elementary OS Luna.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

3. Install Mozilla Firefox

Midori browser does not suit my needs. I need more powerful web browser than Midori in term of features and interface. Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome is my choice. For Mozilla Firefox, this command will install the latest version of Mozilla Firefox.

sudo apt-get install firefox

4. Install Numix theme on Elementary OS Luna

I don’t like default Elementary OS Luna look. So, Numix theme is the best for me so far. Read how to install Numix theme and icons on Elementary OS Luna if you like too.

5. Install Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

I need to install Java to do many things. Oracle Java is my choice. We can install the latest version of Oracle Java on Ubuntu or Elementary OS Luna via PPA with this command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer

That’s the first 5 things I do after installing Elementary OS Luna on my laptop. It would be wonderful if you can share what you do after installing Elementary OS on your PC.
